Charlotte Hornets and coach  Steve Clifford agree to contract extension

The Charlotte Hornets have agreed to a three-year contract extension with coach Steve Clifford, sources told ESPN.com.

Clifford, who’s within the final year of the contract he signed when he was hired in 2013, is now signed by way of the 2018-19 season.

The Hornets are off to a robust 8-6 start out despite injuries, such as the loss of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for the season as a result of a shoulder injury.

Known for his defensive coaching, Clifford has built an excellent reputation for his work ethic and sideline intensity. He  is 84-94 in two-plus seasons with the Hornets and  led them to a playoff berth in 2014.

The Charlotte Observer earlier reported that Clifford had agreed for the deal.
